This ad portrays my conservative vision for turning Maryland around by cutting taxes and wasteful government spending. Across the nation, moderate and liberal Republicans like my opponent, are losing elections to conservatives. Just today we learned that Tea Party backed candidate Joe Miller defeated incumbent Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski.

The message is clear–Republicans want to elect true conservatives who will stand for the values this nation was founded upon–limited government and individual freedom.

Desperate Charles Jenkins Attacks Fellow Republicans When Called Out for Raising Taxes
August 31, 2010

Today, Charles Jenkins sadly continued his campaign of misleading the public and attacking fellow Republicans, by claiming he is the victim of “Mooney-style” attacks.

The Facts Are:

Charles Jenkins voted in 2007 and 2008 against the constant yield rate which would have kept property tax bills from increasing. As a result of his votes, between FY 2007 and FY 2009 Frederick County property tax collections increased by over $41 million.

http://www.frederickcountymd.gov/archives/31/05%2020%2008-%20PUB.pdf

http://www.frederickcountymd.gov/archives/31/05%2015%20%2007-%20PUB.pdf

“Commissioner John ‘‘Lennie” Thompson Jr. (R) was the lone vote against keeping the tax rate at 93.6 cents. Thompson wanted to lower it to the constant yield rate, as he has voted to do every year since 2000… New board member Commissioner Charles A. Jenkins (R) questioned Thompson on his proposal, which would bring in no new revenue for the county… Jenkins and Commission President Jan H. Gardner (D) took exception with his comments, saying that funding county services and programs with the additional revenue shows that they are acting fiscally responsible.” – Gazette April 19, 2007

Jenkins own property tax bill increased by over $500 from 2007 to 2009 (http://frederickcountymd.munisselfservice.com)

Jenkins voted to create a new tax on the sale of homes when he voted for the 2007 county legislative package, which contained a transfer tax (Frederick County Minutes 12/1/2006)

Jenkins voted to increase recordation taxes on the sale of homes (3/13/2007)

Michael Hough, candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates said, “My first thought when I read his liberal diatribe about “Mooney-style attacks” and raising taxes for the children was that Martin O’Malley or the Democrat Central Committee stole his letterhead.”

Hough continued, “Jenkins brags about his ‘tough’ decision making. The only people it was tough on is the families who have to pay his higher taxes. Last week he admitted raising taxes. Now he hopes to hide his voting record from Republicans, but they have a right to know about his 16 tax increases.”

Maryland Right to Life endorsed Michael Hough today, drawing a dramtic contrast between himself and his opponent. Michael Hough was endorsed by the orginization’s three-fold mission includes advancing pro-life public policy, educating the public about right to life issues, and their political action committee promotes the election of candidates who respect all aspects of human life.

Angela Martin, Executive Director of the Maryland chapter of Right to Life said, “I take great pleasure in informing [Michael Hough] that Maryland Right to Life has endorsed you in the 2010 primary election for Delegate in District 3B. We wish you the very best in the upcoming election.”

Hough responded to this news by saying, “I am honored to be endorsed by Maryland Right to Life. Protecting innocent human lives is a priority for me. I look forward to working with my fellow pro-life legislators to reverse Maryland’s liberal abortion on-demand laws.”

Jenkins Supports Job-Killing Trial Lawyer Bills

For Immediate Release

August 3, 2010

BRUNSWICK, MD- Candidate Michael Hough pledges to vote against job killing trial lawyer bills, unlike recently appointed Delegate Charles Jenkins, who broke ranks with the vast majority of Republicans in the Maryland General Assembly by voting to help trial lawyers destroy more jobs in Maryland.

Democrat sponsored bills SB 118 and SB 119 deprive business owners and individuals of their constitutional right to a jury trial when being sued in amounts of up to $15,000.

Frivolous lawsuits — like the man who sued a dry cleaner for $54 million over damaged pants — hurts small business and job creation. Having a right to a jury is an important check for defendants in civil suits when faced against harassing lawsuits.

The Maryland Tort Reform Coalition said this legislation will create a “barrier to justice.”

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce said this legislation “will make it more difficult for businesses to defend themselves.”

The Maryland Trucking Association said, “These small business owners should be entitled to all of the legal protections that a jury trial offers.”

Michael Hough, Candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates said, “During an economic recession the last thing we need to do is pass legislation that lines the pockets of trial lawyers at the expense of small business owners. The right to trial by jury is a fundamental right that should not be deprived because of the liberal trial lawyer lobby.”

Hough continued, “Unlike Jenkins, I will stand against frivolous lawsuits, and vote to protect small business owners who are creating the jobs we need. Once again, the O’Malley appointed delegate is playing going-along to get-along with the Democrats in Annapolis.”

From The Desk Of Ellen Bartlett

July 19, 2010

Dear Friend,

I am inviting you to a special event on July 27th in support of a solid conservative Republican, Michael Hough, who is running for the Maryland House of Delegates in our area. I ask you to join me today in supporting Michael Hough in his run for State Delegate.

I know a good conservative when I meet one. I ought to know since I’m married to a conservative Republican, Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. You can take my word on it when I tell you Michael Hough is a strong conservative who will fight for our values in Annapolis; just like my husband does in Washington, D.C.

I usually don’t write personal letters for candidates, but I have made an exception in this case to support Michael Hough because I believe this race is very important for the future of our state. My husband and I also live in this state house district so it is especially important to me that we have a true conservative representing us.

Just like Roscoe, Michael Hough is pro-life, supports Second Amendment rights, and has signed the Americans for Tax Reform pledge to vote against any and all new tax increases.

Hough has a proven track record:

He is a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he served four years as a Minuteman III missile technician.

For four years he served as legislative aide to conservative Maryland State Senator Alex X. Mooney. Together they fought against the liberal tax-and-spend Democrats in Annapolis.

In 2006, Michael Hough was elected by the voters of Frederick County to serve on the Republican Central Committee. In 2008, his colleagues on the central committee voted to make him the chairman of the committee.

He currently works at the American Legislative Exchange Council, which is an organization for conservative, freedom-minded state legislators. He and his wife Jo reside in Brunswick with his daughter Katelynn (3 years old) and son Grant (23 months old).

Michael Hough is the best candidate because he will fight the hardest against the liberal Democrat coalition currently running our state. Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley passed the largest tax increase in the history of Maryland and increased wasteful government spending to an all-time high.

An ever increasing amount of our hard earned money is being spent on liberal government programs. If in the next couple of years we are going to have any chance of cutting taxes and turning this state around, we are going to have to start electing more conservative Republicans like Michael Hough.

In order to ensure Michael Hough has enough support to win his election, I ask you to join me at a special event on July 27th. at 6:30 p.m.

Your most generous donation is crucial to Michael Hough at this time as he is buying yard signs, bumper stickers, and everything that is needed to run a winning campaign. This race is too important to lose.

I am asking you, as a personal favor to me, to attend our event on July 27th. If you are unable to attend please make the most generous contribution you can afford of $1,000, $500, $250, $100, $50, or even $25 to “Michael Hough for Delegate.” You can also make a contribution to Hough’s campaign with a credit card by visiting his website at www.houghfordelegate.com and clicking on the donate button.

In addition, I ask you to join me in voting for Michael Hough in the Republican primary election on September 14th.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and for all your past support of my husband Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. I hope you will show Michael the same generosity that you have shown us over the years.

Sincerely

Buckeystown, Maryland

P.S. Just as you have supported Congressman Bartlett in the past, I’m asking you to send the most generous contribution you can afford to Michael Hough for Delegate today.

P.P.S. I’ve asked Michael to let me know as individuals respond to my request for support hope we can count on you.

(Brunswick, MD) Michael Hough, candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates opposes Delegate Charles Jenkins’ tax increase proposal. Recently on SeniorTalk Radio, Jenkins announced he would submit Streamline Sales Tax legislation in the Maryland House of Delegates

(https://www.seniorstalkradio.com/Delegate_Charles_Jenkins.html Part II minute 5:43 and 17:17)

Americans for Tax Reform called Streamline Sales Tax legislation, “a cartel of state policymakers that advocate for a simpler tax code, but in reality provide cover for raising taxes and often make tax code even more confusing.” http://www.atr.org/streamlined-sales-tax-project-helps-raise-a3629#

Republican House Minority Whip Delegate Chris Shank, said the streamline sales tax legislation “would be a very very bad idea for Maryland…it taxes commerce over the Internet.”

Shank also said “we would really lose control to unelected bureaucrats in states that are far from our borders, who would then control the tax policy for the State of Maryland…We would lose sovereignty basically.”

Republican Delegate Jeanie Haddaway-Ricco said “In these tough economic times this is one of the last polices we should be looking at.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD0_F3wAFss&feature=related

Republican Michael Hough, Candidate Maryland House of Delegates said “Once again Delegate Jenkins is attempting to raise taxes on the citizens of Frederick and Washington Counties. The Streamline Sales Tax will lead to new taxes on Internet sales, increased tax compliance costs for businesses, and will seriously harm our state sovereignty.”
